How to Choose the Best Technical SEO Services in Australia
What the best technical SEO services deliver, what a technical SEO audit should include, and 8 questions to ask before you hire one in Australia.

The best technical SEO services find what’s stopping Google from crawling, indexing and ranking your pages, fix it in your actual codebase, and prove the result in Search Console. That’s the whole job. The problem is that most technical SEO service pages in Australia don’t show you how they do any of it. I went through the pages ranking on page one for this search. None of them shows a sample audit. None publishes a price. Most list the same nine bullet points and a “book a free consultation” button.
So this guide does the opposite. It covers what a technical SEO audit should actually deliver, how to compare providers, and the red flags worth walking away from.

What Technical SEO Services Actually Include
Technical SEO services cover the parts of your website that decide whether Google can use your content at all. A proper service covers:
-
Crawling. robots.txt, server responses, redirects, and whether Googlebot can reach your important URLs.
-
Rendering. Whether your content exists in the HTML Google renders, which matters a lot on JavaScript-heavy sites.
-
Indexing. Canonical tags, noindex rules, duplicate URLs from filters and parameters, and XML sitemaps.
-
Page experience. Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS) fixed at the template level, not page by page.
-
Structured data. JSON-LD that validates and matches what’s on the page.
-
Migrations and international setup. Redirect maps, replatforming, hreflang and regional subfolders.
If a provider’s list leans heavily on keyword research, backlinks and content writing, that’s a general SEO service with a technical label. Nothing wrong with general SEO, but it’s not what you’re paying for here.
What a Technical SEO Audit Service Should Deliver
A technical SEO audit is the diagnostic step. A good one gives you four things.
1. Findings based on your real data
A crawler report on its own isn’t an audit. The audit should combine a full crawl with your Google Search Console data, so each issue is tied to pages that actually get impressions or should. “2,400 pages missing meta descriptions” means nothing until someone checks whether those pages matter.
2. Fixes ranked by impact
You should get a short list, ordered by traffic impact and effort. Not a 90-page PDF where a missing alt tag sits next to a site-wide noindex. If everything is marked “high priority”, nothing is.
3. Fixes your developer can act on
Each finding needs the affected URLs or templates, what’s wrong, what the fix is, and how to check it worked. If your developer has to re-audit the audit to understand it, the deliverable failed.
4. A way to measure the result
The audit should say which Search Console reports to watch after each fix: Page indexing, Core Web Vitals, and clicks for the affected pages. Without that, you can’t tell whether the money you spent changed anything.
Audit Only or Audit Plus Implementation?
This is the biggest difference between technical SEO services, and most pages don’t spell it out.
| Question | Audit only | Audit plus implementation |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A prioritised list of issues | The list, plus the fixes shipped in your theme or codebase |
| Who fixes it | Your developer or another agency | The SEO provider, or working alongside your developer |
| Works best when | You have an in-house dev team with time | You don’t have developers, or they’re stretched |
| Common risk | The report sits in a folder and nothing ships | Changes made without your team understanding them |
If you go with audit only, ask how the provider handles questions from your developers after delivery. If you go with implementation, ask for every change to be documented. Google recommends asking whether the SEO will share every change they make and explain why.
How to Compare the Best Technical SEO Services in Australia
Google publishes its own guidance on hiring an SEO. These questions combine that guidance with what actually separates good technical work from template work:
-
Can you show me a sample audit? Redacted is fine. If they won’t show you any example of the deliverable, you’re buying blind.
-
Do you fix the issues, or only report them? Get a clear answer before you sign.
-
Do you follow Google Search Essentials? Google recommends asking this directly.
-
What results do you expect, and in what timeframe? A good answer depends on the issues found. A specific ranking promise before anyone has looked at your data is a guess.
-
How will you measure success? You want Search Console metrics tied to the fixes, not a monthly dashboard of vanity numbers.
-
Have you worked on my platform? Shopify, WordPress and custom frameworks break in different ways. Shopify’s duplicate collection and product URLs are a different problem from WordPress plugin conflicts.
-
What access do you need? For an audit, Google says to grant read access to Search Console, not write access.
-
Who actually does the work? The person on the sales call and the person doing the audit are often not the same.

Technical SEO in Australia Is Still Running on Advice Google Retired Years Ago
Technical SEO for Australian websites without the outdated advice. What Google actually uses, what it retired, and what to fix first.
Red Flags in Technical SEO Services
Google is blunt about this: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Walk away if a provider:
-
Guarantees rankings. Google says that if an SEO guarantees their changes will give you first place, find someone else.
-
Won’t explain what they’ll do. Google warns against SEOs that are secretive or won’t clearly explain their plan.
-
Wants you to link to them. Google says you should never have to link to an SEO.
-
Calls a tool export an audit. A “free audit” that arrives in minutes is usually an automated crawl report with no prioritisation.
-
Uses outdated checks. First Input Delay targets (INP replaced FID in March 2024), Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test (retired in December 2023) or Search Console country targeting (removed in 2022) all signal a template that hasn’t been updated.
-
Diagnoses before looking. If someone tells you crawl budget is your problem before pulling a single number, that’s a sales pitch. Most small and mid-size sites don’t have a crawl budget problem at all.
What Technical SEO Services Cost in Australia
None of the Australian service pages ranking for this search publishes a price, so be careful with any figure you see quoted without context. Pricing usually follows one of three models:
-
Fixed-price audit. One-off, scoped by site size and complexity.
-
Audit plus implementation project. Priced per project, based on the fixes needed.
-
Ongoing retainer. Monthly technical monitoring and fixes, common for large or frequently changing sites.
My own pricing works the same way. Every site has a different scope, so I don’t publish a fixed rate. Send me your URL and what you need, and I’ll come back with a quote for that exact scope.
What changes the price most is site size, platform, how many templates need work, and whether implementation is included. Always compare quotes on the same scope.
How I Run Technical SEO Audits
I’ve worked in SEO since 2017 and I build websites myself, so the audit doesn’t stop at a report. The process is simple:
-
Crawl and review. A full crawl plus your Search Console, analytics and server responses.
-
Prioritised fix plan. A short list ordered by impact and effort.
-
Implementation. I fix the issues in your Shopify, WordPress or custom codebase, or work alongside your developers.
-
Measure. Indexing, Core Web Vitals and organic clicks tracked in Search Console.
You can see the full scope on my technical SEO services page, and how this played out in a WordPress SEO migration and technical audit. Shopify stores often have structured data problems too, like a review app duplicating your product schema.
Not sure what’s holding your rankings back? Get in touch with your URL and the problem you’re seeing. I’ll tell you honestly whether a full audit is worth it or a few fixes will do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do technical SEO services include?
Technical SEO services cover crawling, rendering, indexing, Core Web Vitals, structured data, redirects and international setup such as hreflang. The best technical SEO services also implement the fixes and measure the results in Google Search Console.
What is included in a technical SEO audit?
A technical SEO audit combines a full site crawl with Search Console data, lists issues ranked by impact and effort, explains the fix for each one, and defines how to measure the result after each fix ships.
How much do technical SEO audit services cost in Australia?
It depends on site size, platform, complexity and whether implementation is included. Compare quotes on the same scope. For a quote on your site, get in touch with your URL and what you need.
How long does a technical SEO audit take?
It depends on scope. A focused check on a few key templates takes far less time than a full audit of a large ecommerce site. Send me your URL and I’ll give you a timeline together with the quote.
Can a technical SEO service guarantee first-page rankings?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, and advises finding someone else if an SEO guarantees first place.
